Hi, my users complain about their usb drives often not working, although they are detected but dont show any data in the folder (dynamically created on the desktop). but they do work in windoze. I gather k12ltsp has all the apps/utilities incorporated into it and works out of box, and I dont have to dig into FUSE realated stuff. what could be worng here. any ideas ?
03:51* vagrantc needs to figure out how to override upstream ltspfs's 88-ltsp.rules

<openUSE10>
what is the way to loadLocal Apps on ltsp 4.2?
04:52
do i hav to hav a fast client CPU? or a P1 100MHz will do?
04:53
<vagrantc>
depends entirely on what you want to run.
04:53
<openUSE10>
im alnning a KIAX voip client as a locall App
04:53
planning KIAX only
04:53
<vagrantc>
can KIAX voip client run decently on a P1 100MHz machine?
04:54
<openUSE10>
its a VOIP IAX client softphone
04:54
<vagrantc>
can KIAX voip client run decently on a P1 100MHz machine?
04:54
that is the appropriate question.
04:54
<openUSE10>
hmmm, well im hoping somebody has done it here so that he/she could tell me
04:55
what local apps hav u tried vagrantc? if there is any
04:55
<vagrantc>
i haven't used local apps with ltsp 4.2
04:55
just with muekow/5.0
04:56
<openUSE10>
is muekow a flavor of ltsp?
04:57
what local app hav u tried on muekow? at least i can hav a slight idea and on what hardware
04:57
<vagrantc>
yes.
04:58
i've used firefox and icewm, mainly.
04:58
<openUSE10>
what is ur thinclient hardware?
04:58
<vagrantc>
i've used 400MHz machine with 256MB of ram, and 800 MHz machine with 96MB of ram.
04:59
<openUSE10>
i see, i hav a P1 100MHz here
04:59
<vagrantc>
that will probably not work well with firefox. might be fine with icewm.
04:59
<openUSE10>
by ur example i guess i need at least a P2 and a 128Mb RAM to get KIAX running
05:00
<vagrantc>
why would you say that?
05:00
<openUSE10>
well, KIAX would need a little CPU horsepower to transcode
05:00
<vagrantc>
you need to know how much CPU and RAM KIAX takes, otherwise you are comparing apples to oranges.
05:01
<openUSE10>
coding is the keyword in my case since its VOIP KIAX is dealing
05:01
and if its coding/transcoding its a CPU issue i guess
05:02
<vagrantc>
if you have no idea how much RAM/CPU it actually takes, all i can recommend is try it.
05:02
<openUSE10>
thanks very much for ur answers, im so glad ur here
05:03
ill report back here on whatever issues i encounter. Thanks!!!!!

i think thats the problem. I'm trying

<yodaz>
hi all
14:42
I can get ltsp to work with ubuntu dapper, ldm does not log on, it flashes the screen and then return to log in prompt, anybody have an idea ?
14:42
I have done ltsp-update-sshkeys without success
14:42
I have tried with xdmcp, but I have no keyboard when I want to type the login/pass in the gdm login window
14:45
<Gadi>
yodaz: is it a fresh install of dapper?
14:45
<yodaz>
Gadi: yes
14:45
<Gadi>
make sure you have ssh server installed
14:45
<yodaz>
with repository dapper, dapper-updates, dapper-backports, dapper-security and universe/multiverse enabled
14:46
<Gadi>
its easy to overlook when you do things quickly
14:46
<yodaz>
Gadi: I have installed openssh-server
14:46
<Gadi>
ok. then doublecheck that the user you are logging in as exists
14:47
<yodaz>
I can log with this user on the server
14:47
<Gadi>
ah, ok
14:48
the only other time I had that was when I did a dist-upgrade from an earlier ubuntu and it didnt quite complete all the way
14:48
<yodaz>
is there a way to know why the ldm session crash just after typing the login ?
14:48
<Gadi>
make sure you apt-get upgrade the server
14:49
<yodaz>
I have done sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386/ apt-get update
14:49
<Gadi>
if you create a SCREEN_02 = shell
14:49
<yodaz>
then chroot /opt/ltsp/i386/ apt-get dist-upgrade
14:49
and then ltsp-update-kernels
14:49
<Gadi>
you can switch to it and look in the ldm log on the client
14:49
ah, i meant on the serverr
14:49
not in the chroot
14:49
make sure the server is healthy
14:49
<yodaz>
but my server is already up to date
14:49
<Gadi>
ok
14:50
and you did ltsp-update-sshkeys outside the chroot, right?
14:50
<yodaz>
yes
14:51
it says to me # Creating dsa-hostkey for hostname
14:51
and same thing for rsa
14:51
<Gadi>
maybe the dist-upgrade of the chroot hosed something
14:51
if you make a shell on the thin client, try ssh'ing to the server
14:51
from the shell
14:51
<yodaz>
ok
14:51
thx, I will test that now
14:52
<Gadi>
if it prompts you about unknown host, then there's something wrong with the keys
14:52
remember ldm is basically a wrapper around ssh
14:52
<yodaz>
and if it's the key, what could I do ?
14:53
<Gadi>
hmm, well ltsp-update-sshkeys should have fixed that
14:53
yeah, im running out of good ideas here
14:54
how come you have no keybd with xdmcp?
14:54
smells like somethings fishy in the chroot
14:54
<yodaz>
I think so
14:54
<Gadi>
you could try: mv /opt/ltsp/i386 /opt/ltsp/i386.old
14:54
and ltsp-build-client
14:55
<yodaz>
I try to rebuild completely the chroot, but same problem
14:55
I think there's a bug with gdm or so
14:55
<Gadi>
even the latest gdm?
14:56
I cant say I've seen that
14:58
<yodaz>
hmm my server cpu is an AMD Sempron, and the client cpu are intel pentium classic, but I used ltsp-build-client --arch i386, is it good ?
14:58
<Gadi>
you should be able to use it with no args
15:00
<yodaz>
ok
15:02
huh, I can't log in console mode, should I add an account in chroot before ?
15:06* jammcq wonders what steps yodaz took, to try xdmcp
15:06
<jammcq>
I think there's a getty running on tty2-6, so you'd want to run SCREEN_07 = startx
15:06
rather than SCREEN_01 or SCREEN_02
15:07
<GiantPickle>
Howdy all... long time, no type on my part... Hope you all had a Merry Christmas!! I'm wondering if it would be possible to download pictures from a digital camera connected to a client?
15:07
<jammcq>
wow, there's been alot of that question lately. /me thinks lots of people must have gotten new cameras for xmas
15:08
<GiantPickle>
hehe...
15:08
I'm actually doing a setup in a small office... and one of the requirements is for the sales guy to be able to download pics from his camera
15:08
<jammcq>
GiantPickle: simplest way is insert the memory card in a card reader, OR if your camera supports a block-device mode, use that
15:09
<yodaz>
Gadi: ssh works very well in console
15:09
I will try jammcq tip, with SCREEN_07 to see what happens
15:09
<GiantPickle>
jammcq: thanks... so the mem card reader could be hooked up to usb port on client... and then what am I reading to config? Local Media?
15:09
<jammcq>
I have a Nikon camera, and it supports both 'PTP' and 'Mass Storage' mode
15:09
if I put it in 'Mass Storage' mode, it appears as a local device in ltsp
15:10
<GiantPickle>
interesting
15:10
<jammcq>
GiantPickle: yeah, it would be a local device
15:10
BUT.... you'd have to insert the memory card into the card reader, before plugging the card reader into the thin client
15:10
<GiantPickle>
ah
15:10* Gadi thinks that perhaps in LTSP5, we can incorporate the FUSE-based gphoto filesystem
15:10
<jammcq>
we don't detect a hot-plug of a memory card in a card reader (yet)
15:10
<Gadi>
what with all of the FUSE going around
15:11
<GiantPickle>
Gadi: hi
15:11
<Gadi>
GiantPickle: hey
15:11
Happy Winter
15:12
<GiantPickle>

jammcq: thanks btw
15:15
<yodaz>
jammcq: you just rocks guy =)
15:16
it works witj SCREEN_07
15:16
but when I log out, I returns to the traditional X grey screen
15:16
is there a way to reload xdmcp after the user log out ?
15:16
s/witj/with
15:16
<jammcq>
well, it *should* return to a login screen
15:16
<yodaz>
ah
15:16

16:59* vagrantc wonders what specific complaints mark it as evil...
17:03* vagrantc seethes hatred for launchpad
17:09
<jammcq>
hmm, guess he wanted to complain, but didn't really feel like getting into specifics
17:10
<vagrantc>
guess so.
17:11
i find it really difficult to navigate the ltsp/ltspfs codebase on launchpad. it takes me 5-10 minutes just to get to a list of branches...
17:11
<jammcq>
hmm
17:11
is that 'upstream ltsp' or Ubuntu ltsp ?
17:11
<vagrantc>
i actually somewhat like the interface once i get to a branch, but getting there has on more than one occasion caused me to work on other projects.
17:11* jammcq isn't sure if scotty is putting upstream there yet
17:11
<vagrantc>
jammcq: that's a good question.
17:12
ltspfs upstream is on launchpad
17:12
and the closest thing for ltsp is ogra's ltsp-mainline branch
17:12
<jammcq>
you can expect to see very little of scotty over the next couple of weeks
17:12
<vagrantc>
:(
17:12
<jammcq>
he's rolling out a whole new system that is almost certainly going to make him gumpy
17:15
<vagrantc>
well, debian-edu has ltspfs packages in thier repository, and we've uploaded to debian, though it's stuck in debian's NEW queue waiting for approval from the ftp-masters.
17:22
<jammcq>
vagrantc: is that just a matter of hours or days to get approved?
17:22
<vagrantc>
jammcq: not sure. with etch release imminent, i suspect NEW queue is low priority. but it's normally reviewed once per week.
17:23
jammcq: it's certainly too late for etch, but once etch is released, we can probably get it on to backports.org
17:24
<jammcq>
cool
17:24
a huge exercize in patience
17:24
<vagrantc>
though i would like to restructure the packaging a lot post-etch, which will make backporting harder.
