mm I want to install a new kernel (3.15) into my client image (ubuntu 12.04), It does not install in a clean way (update-grup fails as expectet since I did not mount any /dev into the chroot), after rebuilding the image the clients boots into to the initrd a i get a busybox. I did not change anything else and the kernel of the initrd is the new 3.15. Any idears where i could start digging for the bug or where i missed something?

basically I want the thinclients to receive only the browser, is this possible?

Hyperbyte, you seem knowledgeable! Tips for increasing performance? It seems to be superbad
14:24
right now I am only testing with one client

but in the end if it fulfills the requirements I may end up throwing like 120 of these clients out

when setting up auto login do you have to configure all of the names?
15:21
<der_baer>

15:21
<alkisg>
der_baer: and that shows up on the client /proc/cmdline?
15:22
<der_baer>
alkisg: jep with an added BOOT_IMAGE=vmlinux in the end
15:22
<alkisg>
OK
15:22
Did the kernel install successfully?
15:23
(you were installing 3.5 in the chroot, right?)
15:24
<der_baer>
alkisg: we testing 3.15, it worked with a laptop and ubuntu 12.04 so the next step was to test it with our image, the installtion was sucessfull
15:25
<alkisg>
der_baer: wait, so it works ok with one client but not with another?
15:25
<der_baer>
alkisg: no it never worked with ltsp the laptop installtion is a standalone Ubtun12.04 installtion
15:26
<alkisg>
der_baer: let's get a step back
15:26
E.g. why aren't you using the stock kernel?
15:26
If you want support for newer hardware, why aren't you using the -trusty (3.13) kernel?
15:27
And, don't try to run ltsp-update-image if apt has failed, fix apt first
15:27
E.g. for grub, either uninstall grub from the chroot, or mount --bind /sys
15:28
So, I'd suggest that you install the linux-image-generic-lts-trusty kernel, and then purge all other ones
15:29
<der_baer>
alkisg: jep 3.13 is the next try but since 3.15 was working with the laptop i wantet to give it a try. the reason is new hardware witch at least needed the 3.6 kernel
15:30
otherwise i would have upgrade the courrent 3.2 kernel
15:30
to 3.5
15:30
<alkisg>
OK, apt-get install linux-image-generic-lts-trusty then
15:30
3.5 is lts-quantal, which has reached end of life
15:32
<WNxCyrius>
is this lts.conf file supposed to be in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/<arch>? I am not finding it there
15:33
<alkisg>
You need to create one, it doesn't exist by default
15:33
It's necessary if you want to make the kiosk mode work
15:34
<der_baer>
alkisg: ok i give try this
15:35
alkisg: thanks so fare
15:35
<WNxCyrius>
ahhhh ok
15:35
do I have to make the entire thing with all the variables, or only the ones I want?
15:36
<alkisg>
[Default] on top, and only the ones you want
15:38
<WNxCyrius>
and a question about the accounts: Do I have to create each one I need? Can I just enable anonymous login somehow?

is there a list of variables I can use on lts.conf somewhere?

16:28
You don't need an lts.conf at all, no

Basically I am trying to avoid the replacement of a hundred desktops haha
18:16
and pxeboot would make that even better
18:22
<Hyperbyte>
Why do you have to use a Windows server?
18:25
<WNxCyrius>
existing infrastructure blahblah
18:26
we use a cloud-based ERP system accessed through a browser that requires a windows OS to fucking print because they have plugins that are custom made for it
18:26
I am really upset about it haha.

yeah, its rdesktop, correct?
18:39
I saw that in there. Worried about the speed to connect to ltsp server then remote to windows server
18:47
<bennabiy>
alkisg: thank you
18:48
nothing mounted on tmp though
18:48
alkisg ^
18:49
It is like the /tmp mounting never took place, but there is a file somewhere saying that it did.
18:51
<alkisg>
WNxCyrius: it directy connects to the remote windows server. It's xfreerdp, not rdesktop.
18:52
bennabiy: if all else fails, try to reboot the server. If it persists, it has issues with submounts under /home.
18:52
<bennabiy>
alkisg: reboot in order. back shortly

do you mean that it will skip the linux part altogether?
18:54
Know of a guide?
18:54
How does it handle local devices?
18:55
<alkisg>
WNxCyrius: it will boot linux, and it will connect to the windows server
18:55
At that time, there's no traffic to the linux server at all
18:56
Local devices are handled by linux, and forwarded appropriately with xfreerdp
19:02
<WNxCyrius>
solid
19:02
Will give that a shot
19:02
essentially, I need a windows only plugin to install to print from this system
19:03
setting up the printer itself was better than windows and used CUPS

<gbaman>
alkisg: does LOCAL_APPS_EXTRAMOUNTS just mount an extra folder from the server to all clients read only? Documentation isn't massively clear..
19:07
<bennabiy>
alkisg: persisted after reboot
19:08
Is there a way to exclude a folder from /home ?
19:08
I have a folder /home/Public which is a general shared directory for certain users.
19:09
but it is its own partition
19:09
would that be what is causing it?
19:09
unmounted /home/Public and it runs fine
19:11
alkisg: which PRNG is used for ltsp-pnp?
19:17
<alkisg>
gbaman: it mounts a folder via sshfs, with whatever unix permissions it already has on the server
19:17
If you want it read only, just set the appropriate mode on the file system
19:17
<gbaman>
hmm
19:17
<alkisg>
(10:09:27 μμ) bennabiy: would that be what is causing it? => it could be
19:17
File some bug report about it
19:17
(10:11:11 μμ) bennabiy: alkisg: which PRNG is used for ltsp-pnp? => what's a PRNG?
19:18
<bennabiy>
Pseudo Random Number Generator
19:18
<alkisg>
Whatever linux uses
19:18
LTSP is a just collection of scripts and methods for netbooted clients, ltsp-pnp is just about using the server's root file system as a template
19:19
It's not like they have their own linux implementation, no need to refer to "ltsp-pnp" for general linux questions...
19:20
<bennabiy>
I am using it as compared to generating a ltsp chroot through ltsp-build-client
19:20
as I noticed that you tend to do
19:21
<alkisg>
Sure, they both use the underlying distribution
19:21
<bennabiy>
yes
19:21
<alkisg>
So for generic linux questions, it's more appropriate to ask e.g. "what PRNG is linux using", not "what PRNG does ltsp-pnp use"...
19:23
<gbaman>
alkisg: here is one for you that seems to be new.. Using Ubuntu 14.04 with pis, keyboard and mouse aren't working?
19:24
<WNxCyrius>
what is the easiest way to trim back what the client gets?
19:24
<gbaman>
yet works fine for an older server, also running 14.04...
19:24
<alkisg>
gbaman: I've never seen a pi, so I can't answer pi-related questions
19:24
<gbaman>
is there anything that might ring alarm bells given it is keyboard and mouse?
19:25
<alkisg>
I don't know what keyboard and mouse pis have, but I've seen keyb+mouse problems when the kernel + initrd used are not actually installed on the file system
19:25
<bennabiy>
alkisg: I understand your point... but I also call an ltsp specific command, and then just see output. As to what is being run from the system, and what is an ltsp specific thing happening, it is not entirely clear. That is why I specify the method.
19:25
<gbaman>
hmm, will check alkisg, would make sense
19:25
<alkisg>
E.g. you boot 3.13 from tftp or sd card, but only have 3.11 installed in the nbd/local disk
19:26
bennabiy: ok, I'm trying to help you which parts are not ltsp specific, so that you direct them to appropriate channels
19:26
*help you see
19:27
<bennabiy>
alkisg: I understand.
19:28
what would I file a bug against regarding the ltsp-update-image failing if a filesystem is mounted within /home?
19:28
<gbaman>
alkisg: looks like you are right, that is looking like it is the issue, thanks :)
