<workingcats>
hi, i'm trying to use ltsp 5.3.7-0ubuntu2.5 on zentyal/ubuntu12.04 and its been working for i386 thin clients, but now i need to make an amd64 fat client. but when i boot the clients they always use the i386 image
12:54
on boot i can see it says TFTP prefix: /ltsp/i386
12:54
but on the fat clients this needs to be /ltsp/fat-amd64, or so i think at least.. how can i get it to use the latter?
12:56
i know i can set "fat mode" in lts.conf, but it wont be able to use an amd64 userspace if booted with the i386 kernel from ltsp/i386
12:58
<||cw>
what's controlling the TFTP prefix in your setup?
12:59
<workingcats>
||cw, i suppose that's what my question boils down to :/
12:59* ||cw is looking at his config
12:59
<||cw>
I seem to recall this being confusing when I looked before....
13:00
I'm still on 4.x though
13:00
<workingcats>
hm i'll grep through /etc, maybe it's there
13:01
<||cw>
basically, there's zero technical reason for separate i386 and amd64 tftp roots. one only needs 1 tftp root, and both kernels can live there, with pxe configs/menus controlling which kernel gets sent to which client.
13:01
<workingcats>
good point
13:01
yes that would be preferable
13:02
<||cw>
then, mac based directives in lts.conf to control which gets the amd64 ndb/nfs
13:02
<workingcats>
ah yes i think i get it now
13:02
<||cw>
I'm not sure how much that helps, but if you aren't trying to script ltspserver deployment you can override the default configs and make it work
13:02
<workingcats>
yes that's much better
13:04
<||cw>
that's one of the cool things about ltsp, it's just a collection of standard independent tools with some glue to manage them more efficiently. and for hte most part, that glue is platform independent.
13:05
<workingcats>
yeah. we made the mistake of using a "ready to go" distro that isnt really ready to go, at least not for our needs. so since i didnt set it up (the distro came with it) i don't know how to fix it :/
13:06
<||cw>
it's also generally tolerant of replacing any of the parts, as long as you either modify the glue or do the things it does manually
13:06
<workingcats>
yeah
13:07
ok i think i found what settings i need
13:07
thanks :)
13:07
<||cw>
I need to make some time to upgrade to 5. but 4 is suiting our needs, so there's no priority on it
13:08
<workingcats>
yeah
13:08
i went with very new versions for everything so that if i dont have time to do complex updates it won't be a problem for longer ;)

ok made some progress in the meantime.. but i've got a question. i created a new chroot with "ltsp-build-client --fat-client --fat-client-desktop edubuntu-desktop --arch i386 --skipimage", then post-installed fluxbox, removed unity, libreoffice and the edubuntu "metapackage".. but now when I check /var/lib/apt/extended_states EVERYTHING seems to have "Auto installed: 1".. is that normal?
17:32
or should i be asking this in #ubuntu?
