<alkisg>
(non-ltsp): I've switched my clients to using NFS homes, and now they're experiencing "grayed windows" every few minutes; like if the active window hangs for a few secs. Has anyone else experienced this with NFS?
01:01tstafford has quit IRC
01:02
<cyberorg>
alkisg, optimize nfs mount, see rsize, wsize http://nfs.sourceforge.net/nfs-howto/ar01s05.html
01:02
use "async" if you are sure client is not going to disconnect from server ever or nothing critical is being written
01:03
<alkisg>
cyberorg: I tried async, but I didn't see any improvements
01:04
and, about rsize / wsize, ok, I'll have a look at them, but could the default values there be so bad as to make the clients hang for some seconds?
01:04
<cyberorg>
async with rsize, wsize will make a lot of difference if the reason for your stall is network bottleneck
01:05
<alkisg>
The network speed is gigabit, and there weren't any large files being transfered, so I don't think it's a bottleneck
01:05
It looked more like a broken locks problem or something...
01:05
<cyberorg>
anyway try those three things when mounting home
01:05vagrantc has joined #ltsp
01:05
<cyberorg>
hi vagrantc :)
01:06
<alkisg>
Btw, I also updated the kernel along with the nfs change, it's possible that this may be the problem instead - I didn't try to roll back to the previous kernel yet
01:06
Thanks cyberorg
01:07* vagrantc waves
01:07* vagrantc wonders if the BTSers are still awake
01:07
<alkisg>
cyberorg: is sharing the whole /home ok? Or should I somehow "split it" to smaller "chunks", e.g. would it be better if /home/pc1 was a different nfs share than /home/pc2 ?
01:08
<cyberorg>
i usually share whole /home, not sure if it makes any difference
01:09
<alkisg>
So people are actually using it... :P OK, I'll try to troubleshoot it instead of ditching it... :D Ty!

asmok: thanks, I'll try with "hard,intr,rsize=8192,wsize=8192,bg" in the client fstab... but I'm starting to think that maybe it was a problem with the kernel update and not because of nfs

<Shinhung>
nope
14:20
<sbalneav>
What type of mouse? USB or PS/2?
14:22
<Shinhung>
USB
14:23
I've tried the same input devices on the other machine, and it worked
14:25
<sbalneav>
So, I'd say there's either a hardware problem with the machine, or alternatively, there's a bios problem that's preventing the USB adaptor from being seen.
14:25
<Shinhung>
oh btw its video card is VIA UniChrome something
14:26
<sbalneav>
Got "USB" disabled in the bios?
14:26
<Shinhung>
but the mouse works when it's running windows
14:26
I didn't really check the bios though if it's disabled
14:27
I'll check that later
14:27
<sbalneav>
So, run windows on ot :)
14:28
It could be a buggy bios rev.
14:28
Have you tried any PS/2 devices on it?
14:28
<Shinhung>
yeah
14:28
eh the keyboard is PS/2
14:29
it's just a windows xpe
14:36

oooh
14:37
I think I've heard something like that before!

20:20
<Gadi_eeepc>
quite the saturday night activity
20:21
<kas>
:p
20:22
i am having problems configuring client; the cli in the client has wrong keyboard layout (us and need be) but x uses be; 2nd problem is: i can login with cli but not using x
20:25
<Gadi_eeepc>
1. try XKBLAYOUT = be in lts.conf
20:25
<kas>
done and for x it works
20:25
using debian btw
20:25
<Gadi_eeepc>
2. try sudo ltsp-update-sshkeys
20:26
<kas>
ok
20:26
<Gadi_eeepc>
ah u need it for the CLI
20:26
I think thats a locale thing
20:26
<kas>
yeah both
20:26
i can change it but ik keeps changed back
20:28
<Gadi_eeepc>
how are you changing it?
20:30
<kas>
with dpkg-reconfigure or setxkbmap
20:30
btw the trick for ltsp-update-sshkey: still cant login through x (but works with cli)
20:30
<Gadi_eeepc>
so you: chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 ; dpkg-reconfigure locales
20:32
<kas>
no i chroot and use dpkg-reconfigure console-data
20:32
<Gadi_eeepc>
ah, try the above
20:32
also, tthe cli login would be as a thin client user, but logging in thru ldm would be for a server user
20:32
<kas>
whats the different?
20:33
the user excists on both systems
20:33
aah oke now i see
20:33
<Gadi_eeepc>
if you are logging into a shell on the thin client itself, there are no users
20:33
only root
20:33
unless you are creating users
20:33
when you log in thru ldm, you are doing an ssh -X to the server
20:34
<kas>
yes
20:34
thx :d
20:34
woow is quite fast :p
20:36
<Gadi_eeepc>
you can usually speed up video performance with LDM_DIRECTX = True in lts.conf
20:36Ahmuck has quit IRC

it works! :p

but the layout is still set to us :p

any ideas?

<Gadi_eeepc>
in the cli?
20:40
<kas>
yes, x works fine now
20:40
<Gadi_eeepc>
hmm...
20:40
<kas>
anything i could check? config or something
20:40
i bet its my own fault :p
20:44
<Gadi_eeepc>
do you have a "setupcon" binary in the chroot?
20:45
<kas>
when i do setxkbmap on the client (logged in as root) i get error 'cannot open display "default display"'
20:45
a what in chroot? :p
20:45
i guesse no then :p
20:46
<Gadi_eeepc>
how about /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/default/console-setup
20:47
<kas>
this file says xkblayout="be"
20:49
could the clients be set up to use ldap? just thinking about the future!
20:53
i'll come back later, i need to go to sleep, its 3am :p bye, i'll be back soom
20:53
*soon
20:53
<Gadi_eeepc>
try in the chroot something like: install-keymap /usr/share/keymaps/i386/querty/uk.kmap.gz
20:54
ah, ok
20:54
btw, if you auth your server to ldap, you can login as any ldap user thru ldm
