though you'll probably need to have remote syslogging enabled.

<muh2000>
vagrantc only gnome delivers log into syslog.
11:26
but dmesg or something doesnt
11:27
<vagrantc>
you're not going to see the terminal's logs in dmesg output.
11:27
<muh2000>
vagrantc is there any way to look up the boot log of a client ? there are two errors and i dont know what to look for when i cant see them...
11:27
<vagrantc>
but if you configure syslogd for remote reception (i think "-r") and configure the clients to talk to the server, then you should see the client's messages in one of the files in /var/log
11:30
<muh2000>
vagrantc and how do i configure the syslog.conf file for remote reception or the client for talking to the server ?!?
11:30
<vagrantc>
muh2000: what linux distro?
11:31
<muh2000>
debian
11:31
<vagrantc>
ah, good. my distro of choice :)
11:32
sarge, etch ?
11:32
<muh2000>
sarge amd64
11:32

LTSP 4.2 ?
11:32
<muh2000>
yes
11:32
<vagrantc>
ok... server-side configuration
11:33
muh2000: do you have an /etc/default/syslogd ?

<muh2000>

muh2000: how about /etc/init.d/sysklogd ?
11:35
<muh2000>
section "sysloged" here: http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/TroubleShooting ?
11:35
<vagrantc>
?
11:36
<muh2000>
You have to edit the /etc/init.d/sysklogd script and around line 15, you should see a line that says SYSLOGD="-u syslog" You'll need to add a '-r', so it looks like this: SYSLOGD="-r -u syslog"
11:36
<vagrantc>
yes.
11:36
the '-u syslog' bit may not be needed on debian.
11:37
<muh2000>
yes that worked
11:37
<vagrantc>
you just need "-r"
11:37
muh2000: invoke-rc.d sysklogd restart

logging worked without the entry in lts.conf
11:40
but the problems werent logged ^^
11:42
but in meanwhile i could read it a bit. something with ac97 not present.... :/
11:42
<vagrantc>
that's a sound-related kernel module, it think.
11:42
not necessary on all installations.
11:42
<muh2000>
hmmmm but sound doesnt work...
11:42
<vagrantc>
muh2000: why can't you see the error messages?
11:43
<muh2000>
i dont know they arent in the syslog file
11:43
<vagrantc>
can you look at the screen while the thin-client boots?
11:44
<muh2000>
yes. now i have the other "es-something couldnt something misc device..." the x related thing is to long to read in the short boot time. terminal is next to me
11:45
<vagrantc>
you could try and disable X... do you have any SCREEN_NN entries in lts.conf ?
11:45
<muh2000>
es 1371 cannot register misc device
11:45
yes
11:46
screen xx = startx
11:46
<vagrantc>
change startx to shell
11:47
that way, you should be able to use shift-UP_ARROW to scroll through the messages.
11:51
<muh2000>
ok the longer error msg part is related to X
11:51
vagrantc: the sound part i copied: http://nopaste.info/70e4058764.html
11:54
<vagrantc>
no idea here. maybe someone else can help.

i mostly work with the soon-to-be ltsp 5.0 stuff.
11:56
<muh2000>
ah ok, i wish there is a sound support out of the box :) (my smallest client will be used as a mediacenter. and ltsp ist perfekt for that :D)
11:57
<vagrantc>
it might just take some fiddling with your hardware...
11:58

12:00
<muh2000>
when will be ltsp 5.0 be done?
12:00
<vagrantc>
there's already partial implementations for debian and ubuntu
12:00
debian etch
12:01
<muh2000>
hmmm i have to wait a few months till etch is stable :)
12:01
<vagrantc>
i had meant to work on a sarge backport, but spent too much time working on etch for the sarge backport to work.
12:02
in many ways, it's a better approach. for a debian system, we built a debian environment for ltsp. so you can configure things "the debian way" for the ltsp environment. and any software available in for debian is available for the ltsp environment.
12:03
<muh2000>
hmmmm but other distros are left behind or ?
12:04
<vagrantc>
each distro implements it's own ltsp, basically.
12:04
ubuntu was the first to do it, and we adapted the work for debian pretty quickly.

just need a sun machine to build the initial chroot.
17:31
ogra: this makes me think we should make a .udeb for cross-architecture installs... you could use the debian-installer netboot to get the initial install, and then mount a writeable NFS share to install into.
17:32
or tweak ltsp-client-builder to work in that mode.
