Hi ... whats needed to a printer connect to the client to be available for clients to print? LTSP5 on Ubuntu 7.04
09:18Blinny has joined #ltsp
09:21
<Blinny>
I'd like to discuss the possibility of mounting an NFS share post-login. I really think this is something that would help others as well as me, especially in geographically distributed server environments.
09:21
<cdealer>
I thought I saw sometime something lke PRINTER_01 = protocol (usb, serial, paralel)
09:22
<Blinny>
Gadi wrote that process-killing script that runs just post-LDM - would some other script in there execute at a proper time? Especially if the user's home directory were NFS mounted _over_ a current, local directory?
09:22
I imagine one would need the LDM_PASSWORD variable somewhere to complete the NFS mount.
09:23
cdealer: Is this for LTSP5? I have a local printer that uses PRINTER_0_TYPE = U (for usb)
09:23
<cdealer>
Blinny, only this line will make the printer available ?
09:24
<Blinny>
cdealer: I also use "PRINTER_0_DEVICE = /dev/usb/lp0" and "MODULE_01 = usblp"
09:24
(this is a client-specific setting)
09:24
<cdealer>
Blinny, yeah, I was going to ask how ltsp knows where the printer were connected... now you answered... thanks
09:25
<Blinny>
cdealer: http://doc.ubuntu.com/edubuntu/edubuntu/handbook/C/customizing-thin-client.html has some good info about this, though it is somewhat outdated.
09:25
<cdealer>
Blinny, My printer in this case is lp0 ...
09:26prpplague has joined #ltsp
09:29
<cdealer>
Blinny, I must user PRINTER_0_DEVICE and MODULE_01 ?
09:32
<Blinny>
cdealer: It may be loaded automatically; try it with and without. For my setup, I got the MODULE_01 line from here: http://www.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/Printers#USB_Printer
09:32
cdealer: I would guess that it is not required.
09:33
<cdealer>
Blinny, ltsp-update-image after change the file and then you add in you cups the printer ?
09:34
<Blinny>
cdealer: Only ltsp-update-image if you're editing under the image tree (usually /opt/ltsp/${ARCH})
09:34
cdealer: If you're editing the new default location (/var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/${ARCH} then you don't need to re-roll the image.
09:35
<cdealer>
Blinny, yeah, its on /var ...
09:35
<Blinny>
cdealer: But yes, then you add the printer via CUPS. It will be treated like an hp jetdirect printer on port 9100.
09:35
cdealer: Then just reboot the client!
09:35
<cdealer>
okay dude, thank you very much =)
09:35
<Blinny>
cdealer: The lts.conf locationw as changed so you don't have to update the image every time you make a change there.
09:36
cdealer: You're welcome. :)

<rootchick>
hi everybody--did anyone here see my question on the mailing list yesterday about refreshing accounts with ldm? i could really use some pointers!
09:59xachen has quit IRC
09:59
<Blinny>
rootchick: Please just ask again
10:00
<rootchick>
ok. in 4.2, i used some custom scripting in Xreset (with kdm) to delete & recreate the user's home directories on logout/login. there isn't an xreset script with ldm, so i'm trying to figure out how to do it.
10:01
i could use kdm with ltsp5, but I like how ldm handles autologin, so i'd rather use it.
10:03
<Blinny>
rootchick: There is an ldm rc.d directory, into which you can drop scripts to be run at login time. Not sure about logout but I'm sure there's a way.
10:03
<vagrantc>
logout's tricker, as the ssh connection is broken by the time they are run
10:03
<rootchick>
yeah, but that just executes on reboot, doesn't it?
10:04
<Blinny>
rootchick: Check out LTSPROOT/usr/lib/ldm/rc.d/ -- Gadi recently posted a process-killing script to the ltsp-discuss mailing list if you're looking for examples
10:04
<vagrantc>
rootchick: look at the scripts in /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ldm/rc.d
10:04
<rootchick>
i'm not using the ssh connection anyway
10:04
<Blinny>
Oh yeah. Or, depending on distro, LTSPROOT/usr/share/ldm/rc.d
10:04
<vagrantc>
rootchick: if you're using ldm, you're still establishing an ssh connection, even with LDM_DIRECTX
10:05toscalix has joined #ltsp
10:05
<rootchick>
i have looked at those, and tinkered with screen scripts too, but they seem to execute in the chroot instead of on the server's filesystem
10:05
<vagrantc>
rootchick: but scripts in /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/*/ldm/rc.d/S* are executed at login time.
10:05
<rootchick>
at least, i haven't had any luck yet.
10:05
ok
10:05
<vagrantc>
rootchick: correct.
10:05
rootchick: they execute on the client, and you can use the established ssh tunnel to execute something on the server.
10:06
<rootchick>
how do I tunnel it?
10:06
<vagrantc>
rootchick: look at the localdev example
10:06
<rootchick>
ok, thanks.
10:07
<vagrantc>
sorry, S10-delayed-mounter
10:08
<rootchick>
excellent, I will give it a shot. thanks, vagrantc!
10:08
<Blinny>
vagrantc: Wait. What is the different between ...usr/share/ldm and ...usr/lib/ldm ?
10:08
<vagrantc>
of course
10:09
Blinny: just depends on what version you're using ... /usr/share/ldm is where it goes in the current and future versions.
10:09
<Blinny>
vagrantc: Hrm. I have both on my Hardy box.
10:10
I wonder why Gadi dropped that process killing script into /usr/lib/ldm/ then
10:10
<vagrantc>
he's probably still developing on gutsy
10:10
it likely supports themin both locations
10:10
<Blinny>
But both are supported? Yeah.

vagrantc: You see my lines re: NFS mounting at ~$user at login? Any idea as to the feasibility?
10:11
<vagrantc>
Blinny: missed them ...
10:13
<ltsppbot>
"Blinny" pasted "NFS mounting of /home/$user at LDM login" (3 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/28
10:14
<Blinny>
Basically, I have servers in different cities, but users who log in at both sites. I'd like to NFS mount /home/$user at login for users who are not at the location of the main fileserver.
10:15
I have lofty ideas of dispersing /home/$user to the servers where the users most often work, and then, when they're not in their usual location, NFS mounting back to _their_ home location's fileserver, but that's somewhat more complicated.
10:17slidesinger has quit IRC
10:20
<vagrantc>
Blinny: well, as long as the user has permission to mount their home directory via ssh, you can run wahtever you want through the ssh tunnel via rc.d/S* scripts
10:20
s, directory via ssh, directory,
10:22exodos has quit IRC
10:23
<Blinny>
vagrantc: I'm more worried about the timing of such a mount, as I'm unfamiliar with the intricacies of the LDM-to-full-session conversation
10:25
vagrantc: I assume you'd need a /home/$USER already on whatever login server you have, so that SSH would work. But could you then mountover that directory with the remote NFS one without messing up any lock/run/whatever files that were in the original, local /home/$USER ?
10:25
<vagrantc>
Blinny: yes, you might have strange behavior with some lingering processes using filehandles from the mounted-over homedirectory
10:26
Blinny: but play around with it and see :)
10:26
<Blinny>
vagrantc: Heh.
10:27
vagrantc: Ok! Don't suppose you've heard of anyone else asking for such a thing have you? I don't know how easy it'd be to abstract this functionality away from my environment.
10:29
<vagrantc>
a little bit, sure.

hello. I access to the tftp server over a vpn connection. but unfortunately there are always paket fragmentation. Now I tried to set the blocksize of the tftp server to 1200. This I could do in the file /etc/default/ltsp-hpa. And then it was working. But now I deleted all on my computer an reinstalled all. Unfortunately now it doesn't work again. Can you please help me?
11:40
This is the output from the file: RUN_DAEMON="yes" OPTIONS="-l -s /var/lib/tftpboot -B 1200"
11:41
<vagrantc>
nathy_: /etc/default/tftpd-hpa ?
11:42
<nathy_>
yes.
11:44
is this wrong?
11:45
<vagrantc>
no idea...
11:45
<nathy_>
sorry I worte ltsp-hpa. of course it is tftpd-hpa
11:46
should I use RUN_DEAMON yes or no?
11:50
<vagrantc>
typically, it's run from inetd, so no.
11:51
but then it will only respect the settings in /etc/inetd.conf
11:51
so your -B 1200 would need to be set in inetd.conf
11:51
presuming that's what you actually need.
11:52
grep ^tftp /etc/inetd.conf
11:52
to see if it's configured to run from inetd
11:54
<nathy_>
I did grep ^tftp /etc/inetd.conf output: tftp dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/in.tftpd /usr/sbin/in.tftpd -s /var/lib/tftpboot -B 512
11:55
the -B 512 I put in just now
11:57
<vagrantc>
restart your inetd ... probably openbsd-inetd if running debian or ubuntu'
11:57
<nathy_>
restart the server?
11:58
<vagrantc>
invoke-rc.d openbsd-inetd restart
11:58
as root
11:58
<nathy_>
donw
11:58
done
11:58
great. it is working
11:58
thanks a lot
11:59
so it only looking for the config in inetd?
11:59
<vagrantc>
that is how you have it configured.
12:00
if you want it configured differently, you'll need to disable it from inetd, edit /etc/default/tftpd-hpa, and restart both tftpd-hpa and openbsd-inetd
12:00
but i'd recommend sticking with inetd.
